Imagine in 24hrs ticking-off whalesharks, mantarays, humpback whales and tiger sharks...well, that happened to some of our lucky guests in 2025!
And thats not uncommon in Ningaloo Reef - one of the world’s last untouched fringing reefs, and arguably the best freediving destination in Australia.
From shallow shore dives to outer reef drop-offs, from whale shark encounters to stunning hikes - Ningaloo offers something for everyone.
Why Freedive Ningaloo Reef?
Unlike the Great Barrier Reef, Ningaloo starts right at the shoreline. You can literally walk in and start diving - no boats, no sea sickness, no fuss.
But don’t let the accessibility fool you - the marine life is next level:
✔️ Whale sharks (March to July)
✔️ Manta rays (year-round)
✔️ Humpback whales (July to October), maybe Orca too!
✔️ Turtles, dugongs, reef sharks, dolphins, stingrays, and octopus
✔️ Coral gardens and massive bommies just metres offshore
Add in glassy viz, vibrant reef life, and that wild West Aussie feel, and you’ve got a freediving paradise.
Best Shore Dive in Ningaloo: Oyster Stacks
If you only do one shore dive—make it Oyster Stacks.
A short walk from the car park leads to some of the richest coral and marine life on the entire reef. It’s shallow, colourful, and buzzing with action. You'll likely spot turtles, blue-spotted rays, reef sharks and clouds of reef fish - all just a few metres from the shore
🕒 Pro tip: Only dive here close to high tide. The reef sits super shallow, and anything less than full tide becomes dangerous for both you and the coral.
Inner vs Outer Reef: What You Need to Know
Inner Reef
Best for snorkelling and casual shore dives
Protected, calmer waters
Easily accessible from Turquoise Bay, Oyster Stacks, and Lakeside
Outer Reef
Exposed, deeper, and wild
Advanced only: strong currents, surf zones, and timing is everything
Plan around the tides. On a dropping tide, the reef begins flushing water out fast—it’s easy to get caught in intense outgoing currents if you overstay.
Rule of thumb: Be on your way back well before mid-to-low tide. Always check local conditions before heading out.
Want to Line Dive in Exmouth?
If you're chasing depth or want to keep training while you’re in town, hit up our mates at Salty Hearts Freediving. They're based in Exmouth and run regular line diving sessions with proper safety, coaching, and stoke.
Being Ningaloo Reef, even line sessions can turn into epic marine encounters! In 2024 whilst line diving, we had both a mum and a calf, and 3 adult humpback whales buzz us in the session!
Want the Full Experience? Join Our Ningaloo Retreat
At Deep Sensations Freediving, we host annual Ningaloo retreats—and they’re next level.
🧭 Here’s what sets us apart:
✅ Private charters (no big crowds—just our crew)
✅ Spotter planes to find and swim with whalesharks, humpback whales and mantas
✅ Reef exploration with expert guides
✅ Marine Biology and Conservation talks
✅ Breathwork and equalisation workshops
✅ Underwater photography tips with epic wildlife encounters
✅ Community vibes—small groups, good food, and the best people
Most standard tours cram 20–30 people in the water. We cap ours around 16. That means more space, more time in the water, and more personal connection with the animals.
Our retreats book out fast every year. Spots open 6–12 months ahead.
Note: Suitable for all levels, but you must be confident in the water, having a basic level of swim fitness and snorkel experience is a must.
Don’t Skip Coral Bay
Just a short drive south of Exmouth, Coral Bay is a quieter, more relaxed version of Ningaloo—and just as spectacular.
For ethical marine tours, we highly recommend Ningaloo Marine Interactions. Whether it’s snorkelling with manta rays or spotting dolphins and whales whilst enjoying a delicious lunch, these guys are top-notch.
Where to Stay in Exmouth
Heads up—accommodation in Exmouth is limited and expensive, especially from March through October. Book at least 6 months in advance, especially if you’re planning to join a retreat or do any whale shark tours.
Where to Refuel After a Dive
Once you're back on land, hit up these local favourites:
SOso Café – Best coffee in town (trust us)
Whalebone Brewing Co. – Woodfired pizza and craft beer
Froth Craft Brewery – Live music and good pub eats
Potshot Hotel – Friday night pub scene if you're feeling social
