Freediving has exploded in popularity across Australia in recent years, and for good reason. It’s not just about holding your breath and going deep, it’s about learning how to relax under pressure, connect with your body, and explore the ocean in a way that feels calm, safe, and incredibly rewarding.

If you’re looking for the best way to learn, the Molchanovs Freediving Education System is considered the global gold standard. Designed by world record holder Alexey Molchanov and developed with input from elite freedivers, this system is structured, progressive, and internationally recognised. At Deep Sensations Freediving, we’re proud to be one of the only schools in Australia offering Molchanovs Wave 1, Wave 2, and Wave 3 courses - giving you the full pathway from beginner to advanced diver.

What Are the Molchanovs Wave Courses?

Molchanovs courses are structured in “Waves.” Each level builds on the last, giving you a clear path to progress at your own pace.

  • Wave 1 Freediver Requirements: This is where it all begins. You’ll learn how to breathe for relaxation, master the Frenzel equalisation technique, and safely reach depths of around 12–20 metres. It’s perfect for absolute beginners or snorkelers who want to gain confidence and skills in deeper water.

  • Wave 2 Freediver Requirements: Once you’re comfortable at beginner level, Wave 2 introduces advanced equalisation, training for CO₂ tolerance, and more efficient finning techniques. You’ll aim for dives up to 30 metres, longer breath-holds, and deeper awareness of safety and rescue protocols.

  • Wave 3 Freediver Requirements: This is where freediving gets truly advanced. Wave 3 is for divers ready to refine their technique, manage dives below residual volume, and hit depths of 34–40 metres. Very few schools in Australia teach Wave 3, and completing it puts you among an elite community of freedivers.

Each course isn’t just about meeting depth or time requirements - it’s about building knowledge, confidence, and a solid foundation you can grow on for years to come.

Why Train with Deep Sensations Freediving?

There are freediving schools across Australia, but we do things differently at Deep Sensations Freediving.

  • Stress-Free Certification: Unlike other programs where you either pass or fail in a single weekend, we give you 12 months of complimentary training to complete your requirements. This means you can learn at your pace, without pressure.

  • Free Premium Gear Hire: Every course includes wetsuits, masks, fins, snorkels, and weights at no extra cost. That way you can focus on learning without investing in gear upfront.

  • Small Student Ratios: We keep our instructor-to-student ratios small, so you’ll always get personal attention and feedback.

  • Community Beyond the Buoy: From social dives and workshops to retreats and international trips, joining Deep Sensations Freediving means joining a family of ocean lovers who share your passion.

  • One of the Only Wave 3 Providers in Australia: If you’re serious about advanced depth training, we’re one of the few schools where you can continue your journey all the way through Wave 3.

Our ethos has always been “Passion First, Business Second.” This isn’t about getting people through the door; it’s about creating an environment where divers feel supported, safe, and inspired to keep growing.

The Benefits of Learning Freediving in Australia

Australia is one of the best places in the world to learn freediving. From the temperate waters of Wollongong and Jervis Bay, to the tropical reefs of Ningaloo and Byron Bay, our coastlines are rich with marine life and incredible training environments.

  • Wollongong & South Coast: Easy access for Sydney divers, with calm conditions and a thriving freediving community.

  • Byron Bay: Home to Julian Rocks, where manta rays, turtles, and grey nurse sharks make every dive unforgettable.

  • Tasmania: Dramatic kelp forests and pristine southern waters for divers chasing wild, raw beauty.

  • Ningaloo Reef: Whale sharks, manta rays, and crystal-clear blue water — an absolute dream for divers.

Training in different environments helps you become a more adaptable and confident freediver. And because Deep Sensations Freediving runs courses and retreats across all these locations, you can combine skill progression with once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
