What are the Molchanovs Wave 1 Requirements?

The Molchanovs Wave 1 Freediving course is the entry-level course for those eager to start their freediving journey with one of the most renowned training systems in the world. The Molchanovs system, created by world champion freedivers, is designed to give students the foundational skills to dive safely and comfortably while building a lifelong connection to the ocean.

What is the Wave 1 Course?

The Molchanovs Wave 1 course is designed for beginners with no prior freediving experience. It's a comprehensive introduction to freediving that combines both theoretical and practical training. This course teaches the fundamental skills needed for safe and enjoyable freediving, focusing on equalisation, breathing techniques, safety protocols, and buddy rescue skills.

Key Requirements to Pass the Molchanovs Wave 1 Course:

  1. Theory Exam: The course begins with theoretical modules covering essential topics such as physics, physiology, safety, and the proper mindset for freediving. You'll need to pass an online theory exam to demonstrate your understanding of these topics. The exam is usually multiple-choice, focusing on knowledge areas like the dive reflex, partial pressures, equalisation techniques, and safety procedures.

  2. Static Apnea: In the pool or confined water, you'll be required to hold your breath for a minimum of 1 minute and 30 seconds in a relaxed state (static apnea). This exercise aims to familiarize you with breath-hold sensations and build your confidence in extending your breath-hold time comfortably.

  3. Dynamic Apnea: You must complete a dynamic apnea swim of at least 30 meters. This task involves swimming horizontally underwater while holding your breath, which tests your ability to manage your oxygen efficiently, maintain relaxation, and use correct finning techniques over a distance.

  4. Equalization: Proper equalization is crucial for descending safely and comfortably in the water. Wave 1 divers must demonstrate effective equalization techniques, such as Frenzel or Valsalva, throughout their training. Instructors will assess your ability to equalise consistently without discomfort or injury.

  5. Safety and Rescue Skills: As safety is paramount in freediving, you must demonstrate various rescue skills. This includes performing a simulated rescue of a diver from a depth of 5 meters, practicing proper ascent techniques, and executing emergency procedures calmly and effectively. You’ll also learn and demonstrate proper buddy checks and procedures for diving with a partner.

  6. Constant Weight Freedive: The primary objective is to complete a constant weight dive to a depth of 12 meters (39 feet). This is where you descend and ascend using either bi-fins or a monofin while maintaining a consistent weight. The focus is on body positioning, relaxation, finning technique, and proper breathing before and after the dive. Instructors will observe your technique, control, and equalization throughout the dive.

  7. Breathing Techniques: You’ll learn about proper breathing techniques, including how to prepare for a dive (breathe-up) and recover after a dive. You’ll need to demonstrate an understanding of diaphragmatic breathing, the importance of CO2 tolerance, and how to manage stress and relaxation effectively during the course.

  8. Open Water Skills: In the open water sessions, you'll perform a variety of skills, including free immersion (pulling down a rope without using fins), duck dives, equalization, and buddy procedures. You'll be required to dive repeatedly to a target depth (between 5-10 meters initially) to build confidence and skill.

Don't Stress Too Much About the Requirements!

Remember, the Molchanovs Wave 1 course is ultimately about the knowledge and education you gain, not just ticking off requirements. Unlike scuba diving, where failing to meet certain criteria means you can't dive, in freediving, the true value comes from the skills and understanding you develop during the course. You'll be equipped with the knowledge to explore the world of freediving safely, regardless of whether you meet every requirement.

If you do want to achieve certification and don't pass all the requirements on your first attempt, don't worry! You have up to 12 months to come back and complete them. You won't need to redo the entire course—just a pool or depth coaching session to meet the necessary criteria.

Why Choose the Molchanovs Wave 1 Course?

The Molchanovs Wave 1 course isn’t just about meeting the requirements; it’s about developing a strong foundation for a lifelong freediving journey.
