A live two-hour online workshop for beginners who want to understand breath-holding, relaxation, safety and the science behind freediving.

You do not need to be a freediver to join this workshop.

You might be completely new, curious about freediving, struggling to relax during breath-holds, or simply want to understand what is actually happening inside your body when you hold your breath.

This live online masterclass will introduce you to the core principles behind freediving in a clear, practical and safety-focused way.

We will cover what happens to your body during a breath-hold, why the urge to breathe develops, how relaxation can improve your comfort, and how your body naturally adapts through the mammalian dive reflex.

Most importantly, you will learn the safety fundamentals every breath-hold diver should understand before training in or around water.

This is not about pushing yourself to your limit or chasing a huge breath-hold time.

It is about learning the foundations properly.

What You Will Learn

During the two-hour workshop, we will cover:

  • The essential safety rules of freediving and breath-hold training
  • Why you should never practise breath-holding in water alone
  • The difference between safe breathing preparation and dangerous hyperventilation
  • What happens to oxygen and carbon dioxide during a breath-hold
  • Why the urge to breathe does not necessarily mean you have run out of oxygen
  • What contractions are and why they happen
  • How stress, tension and overthinking affect your breath-hold
  • Practical relaxation and body-awareness techniques
  • How the mammalian dive reflex supports the body during immersion and breath-holding
  • How to prepare your breathing before a breath-hold
  • How to breathe and recover correctly afterwards
  • Common mistakes beginners make
  • How to continue learning and training safely

You will also be guided through a simple dry breath-hold exercise performed safely while seated or lying down.

The exercise will focus on relaxation, body awareness and recognising common breath-hold sensations. It will not be a competitive or maximum breath-hold attempt.

Through Deep Sensations Freediving, Curtis has helped build one of Australia’s largest freediving communities, delivering courses, training, expeditions and ocean experiences across Australia and internationally.

His teaching style is practical, relaxed and easy to understand, with a strong focus on safety and helping people become more confident in the water.

This Is Not a Freediving Certification Course

This workshop is an introduction to the theory, science, safety and relaxation principles behind freediving.

It does not replace an in-person freediving course or practical in-water safety training.

You will not receive a freediving certification, and the workshop will not teach you to complete unsupervised breath-holds in water.

For anyone planning to freedive, spearfish or practise underwater breath-holding, completing a recognised face-to-face course is strongly recommended.

Important Safety Information

All practical exercises completed during this workshop must be performed seated or lying down in a safe environment.

Do not participate in breath-hold exercises while:

  • In water
  • Swimming
  • Bathing or showering
  • Standing
  • Driving
  • Operating equipment
  • In any environment where losing awareness could result in injury

Never practise breath-holding in water alone.

Hyperventilation can delay the urge to breathe without increasing oxygen levels enough to make a breath-hold safe. This significantly increases the risk of hypoxic loss of consciousness.

Participants should stop immediately if they feel unwell, dizzy, distressed or uncomfortable.

Anyone with a medical condition, who is pregnant, or who has concerns about participating should seek advice from an appropriate healthcare professional before joining the practical components.

Learn the Fundamentals Properly

Breath-holding is not just about taking a big breath and trying to last as long as possible.

Relaxation, safety, physiology, preparation and recovery all matter.

This workshop will give you a clear starting point, help you understand what is happening inside your body, and show you how freedivers approach breath-holding safely.

Join the Breath-Hold Masterclass and learn the fundamentals from anywhere in the world.
