How to Travel With Freediving Fins

How to Travel with Freediving Fins Without the Hassle

As freedivers, our fins are one of the most critical pieces of gear we own. They’re the key to efficient movement underwater, helping us dive deeper, longer, and more gracefully. But when it comes to traveling with those long, delicate blades, things can get a bit tricky.

Whether you're heading to your favourite local dive spot or jetting off to an exotic destination, knowing how to pack and protect your freediving fins is essential. Let’s dive into three tried-and-tested tips to make traveling with your fins a breeze.

1. Choose the Right Bag

The foundation of hassle-free travel is selecting the perfect bag for your freediving gear. A bag specifically designed for freedivers, like the Beuchat Explorer wheely bag, offers compartments for your fins, wetsuit, mask, and other accessories.

When choosing a bag, look for:

  • Length and durability: Ensure the bag can accommodate the full length of your fins.

  • Compartments: Dedicated slots for your fins and gear prevent scratches and reduce movement during transit.

  • Wheels or straps: Choose a wheely bag for convenience or a lightweight backpack if you're packing light.

A good bag protects your fins and simplifies the packing process, leaving room for everything you need (including snacks for the road—priorities!).

2. Add Extra Protection

Even the best bags might not fully shield your fins from damage. Adding a layer of protection can give you peace of mind.

  • Dry Bags: Slip your fins into a dry bag before placing them in your travel bag. This protects them from scratches and keeps them dry, even if the rest of your luggage gets wet.

  • Padding: Use your clothes, wetsuit, or towels to create a buffer around your fins. This prevents bending and absorbs any shocks during transit.

3. Pack Like a Pro

Packing isn’t just about cramming everything into your bag—it’s about strategy.

  • Start with the fins: Place your fins at the bottom of your bag so they lie flat and are less likely to bend.

  • Wrap and secure: Tuck soft items like wetsuits, rash guards, or t-shirts around the fins to keep them snug.

  • Carry-on essentials: Always keep a small dry bag in your hand luggage with your mask, snorkel, and smaller blades or travel fins. That way, if your main bag gets delayed, you can still enjoy some water time.

Bonus Tip: Check Your Airline’s Baggage Policy

Before you head to the airport, always check your airline’s baggage allowances and restrictions. Freediving bags can be bulky, so it’s better to plan ahead to avoid any surprises (and extra fees!) at the check-in counter.
