Our Freediving Community Comes Together for R U OK? Day 2025

ree

Over the weekend we held our third annual R U OK? Day community dive, and it was one of those days that really reminds us why we do this.

More than 25 divers from Wollongong, Sydney and the South Coast came together at Bushrangers Bay. The sun was out, we got a good dose of vitamin D, and the grey nurse sharks made an appearance at one of our favourite local spots. We kicked off with a breathwork session from Ryan, then spent the morning diving before heading into Shellharbour for coffee and connection. A quick coffee turned into hours of chats and laughter - the last of us didn’t leave until 4:30 pm, almost nine hours after we started. That says everything about how strong the bonds in this community have become.

But beyond the diving itself, this day is about something bigger.

R U OK? Day is a reminder to check in on the people around you, but it’s also a reminder to check in on yourself.

Life gets busy, and it’s easy to push aside the things that fill your cup. Sometimes taking care of yourself is as simple as making the time to get in the water, switch off from the noise, and reconnect with nature and yourself.

There’s science behind it too. Being in and around water has a profound effect on our wellbeing, it’s often called the Blue Mind effect. The ocean has this incredible way of calming the nervous system, reducing stress, and bringing you back into the present moment. Whether you’re diving, swimming, or just floating on the surface, you leave the water feeling lighter, clearer, and more connected.

That’s why these community days matter so much. They’re not just about freediving, they’re about building friendships, creating space to breathe, and remembering that looking after your mental health can start with something as simple as a morning in the ocean.

Huge thanks to everyone who joined us - both our regular crew and the new faces. We’re so grateful for this community and can’t wait for the next one. 💙
